JEFF MESSNER – President, Co-founder
Clean-tech innovator, sustainable development leader, mediocre golfer
Jeff Messner is the President and Co-founder of Novus Earth. He is responsible for the design of the innovative closed loop geothermal technology and is actively growing the company in the clean energy space. Through valuing environmental stewardship, he has spearheaded a renewable energy technology with net-zero emissions that opens up new markets in the energy and agricultural sectors.
His previous work at Weatherford Drilling Services in technical sales has been an integral part of his ability to develop client relationships built on trust. Through effective project management of over 20 companies, he had attained $25 million per year in sales. Jeff has a strong technical background in directional drilling from over a decade of experience in his roles as a Field Specialist and Field Supervisor.
Jeff is a lifelong learner that is constantly reading to get ahead of market trends, attending conferences, and most recently obtained his Renewable Energy & Conservation Certification. His ability to build strong relationships is a natural skill he started developing on the golf course over the past couple decades, as he dedicates his time to maintaining long term relationships in his personal and professional life.
Derek Gauger – CFO | CSO
Strategic advisor, relationship builder, clean energy advocate, lifelong outdoorsman
Derek Gauger brings a diverse background in business development, strategic partnerships, and operational leadership to Novus Earth Energy. With a passion for advancing sustainable energy solutions, Derek works collaboratively with industry leaders, stakeholders, and communities to help support the growth of geothermal innovation and the transition toward a lower-carbon future.
Throughout his career, Derek has built a reputation for fostering strong professional relationships grounded in trust, transparency, and long-term value creation. His experience working across multiple sectors has given him a practical understanding of business strategy, project coordination, and the importance of aligning technical innovation with real-world applications. At Novus Earth, he contributes to the company’s mission of delivering scalable geothermal energy solutions that improve both energy and food security.
Driven by curiosity and continuous learning, Derek is passionate about emerging technologies, sustainable development, and building resilient systems that create meaningful impact for future generations. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time sailing, connecting with people, and supporting initiatives that strengthen communities and environmental stewardship.
Cody Thompson – Indigenous Advisor
Relationship builder, community advocate, strategic connector
Cody Thompson serves as an Indigenous Advisor for Novus Earth, supporting the company’s commitment to meaningful engagement, collaboration, and long-term partnerships with Indigenous communities. Passionate about creating opportunities through sustainable development, Cody works to help bridge industry innovation with community values, ensuring projects are approached with respect, transparency, and shared benefit.
With a strong background in business development and relationship management, Cody has built an extensive network across the energy and industrial sectors. His ability to connect people, foster collaboration, and create trust-based partnerships has made him a valuable contributor in advancing projects that prioritize both economic growth and environmental responsibility. At Novus Earth, he helps strengthen the company’s vision of delivering renewable geothermal solutions that support energy security, sustainability, and community prosperity.
Cody is driven by a belief that the future of clean energy must include Indigenous leadership, participation, and shared success. He is passionate about supporting initiatives that create lasting impact for future generations while respecting the land, culture, and communities involved. Outside of work, Cody enjoys spending time outdoors, networking with industry leaders, and supporting community-focused initiatives throughout Western Canada.

Novus Earth is in collaboration with the University of Alberta team under a 4 year Mitacs Project focusing on the fluid and rock interactions in Canada’s geothermal systems through thermo-hydro-mechanical modeling.

In Canada, renewable energy sources, such as hydro, biomass, and wind, provide just 16% of Canada’s total primary energy supply. However, we believe a better sustainable energy resource is available. Across the globe, the International Energy Agency reports that CO2 emissions have risen 63.35% since 1990. The best hope for reducing global carbon emissions and reversing the effects of climate change involves bringing renewable energy into the mix.
